Write letter to
National Olympic committee
Date
_______________
Dear National Olympic
Committee President,
We are writing to you to inquire how your National
Olympic Committee will respond to the Chinese
government’s unfulfilled promise that it would
improve the human rights situation in China if the
2008 Olympics were granted to Beijing.
Principle 2 of the
Charter of the Olympics that declares that the goal
of Olympism is to “place sport at the service of the
harmonious development of men, with a view to
promoting a peaceful society concerned with the
preservation pf human dignity” and article A-1 of
the Code of Ethics states that “safeguarding the
dignity of the individual is a fundamental
requirement of Olympism”.
As you know, the
Chinese government not only does not adhere to these
principles, but it has also ignored its promise
regarding the implementation of Olympics principles.
Instead, it has implemented execution, torture,
government-sponsored human trafficking and slave
labor in East Turkistan, currently a province of
northwest China.
The Chinese government
also announced that it would close the Olympic door
for East Turkistan and Tibet to hide its crimes-
stating that journalists’ travel to these regions
would be restricted prior to and during the
Olympics, and that activists hoping to champion the
rights of Uyghurs and Tibetans would be barred from
entering China during this time.
The Chinese government
would like to hide the dramatic acceleration in
executions that occurred in East Turkistan in the
wake of September 11 under the justification of the
“global war on terror”. The Chinese government would
also like to conceal the torture that takes in East
Turkistan, which is not used in any other location.
The Chinese government
would also like to hide the large scale of human
trafficking that is taking place within its borders,
and especially the trafficking of women from East
Turkistan to eastern provinces. The Chinese
government is relocating a large number of young and
unmarried Uyghur women girls to eastern China.
Ranging in age between 14 and 25, these young women
are exploited as a source of slave labor and cheap
labor, and are even forced into sexual slavery.
Terrible human rights
abuses continue to take place in China today,
despite human rights advocacy taking place around
the world, and Uyghurs continue to suffer under the
repression of the Chinese government.
As your Committee is among the
institutions responsible for the promotion of the
Olympic goals, you should make an effort to protect
the ideals of the Olympic Games. In this context, we
would like to learn your response to China’s current
human rights violations in East Turkistan.
Thank you for your attention,
