About Us
This website is created by the World Uyghur Congress
in order to raise awareness of the gross human
rights violations of the Uyghur people in East
Turkestan (also known as the Xinjiang Uyghur
Autonomous Region of China) and to expose China’s
broken promises to improve human rights made to the
International Olympic Committee (IOC) before Beijing
was awarded the 2008 Olympic Games.
WUC believes that a country that does not respect
human rights but continues to violate them does not
deserve to host the Olympics because the Olympic
Spirit is about building a “peaceful and better
world,” not a world full of torture, unfair trials
and constant executions of peaceful dissidents.
Building a “peaceful and better world,” as the
Olympic Mission states, requires mutual
understanding with a “spirit of friendship,
solidarity and fair play.” China lacks such mutual
understanding based on the Olympic spirit.
China, as the world’s biggest human rights violator,
cannot possibly build a peaceful and better world by
continuously and grossly violating the fundamental
human rights of the Uyghur people. What China has
been practicing since granted the right to host the
2008 Olympic Games in Beijing violates the Olympic
spirit of “friendship, solidarity and fair play.”
Today, China executes more people each year than the
rest of the world combined, and it only executes
Uyghur political prisoners for even nonviolent
offenses.
The Olympic Games are not just about athletes from
different nations coming together every four years
to compete in their respective fields for gold
medal. They are held to celebrate the excellence of
free human spirit. Although the Olympics is not a
political event, but it does have political
significance as totalitarian and authoritarian
nations try to manipulate it to showcase their
triumphs to the world. China, as an authoritarian
state, will surely use the occasion to deceive the
international community. We should not allow that to
happen.
We ask you to join our Olympic campaign to expose
and protest China’s gross human rights violations
and broken promises to improve them. Please sign our
petition and make your voice heard loud and clear.
Thank you!
