I am writing as someone who is concerned
about human rights conditions around world,
and who is inspired by the ideals of the
Olympic Games.
The 2008 Olympic torch was handed to China
in part because it promised to improve its
human rights situation. However, with less
than one year left before the Olympics
begin, China has not fulfilled its
promises. On the contrary, it has
continued, and in some cases accelerated,
human rights violations against the people
inside its borders. in the case of East
Turkistan, China is responsible for various
forms of persecution, including executions
of political prisoners, arbitrary arrests,
torture, human trafficking, and labor
abuses.
China should not be allowed to use the
Olympic Games as an excuse to impose a
repressive regime in East Turkistan. In
order to make Olympic ideals into reality, I
respectfully ask the IOC to urge China to
change its behavior on human rights. In East
Turkistan, China must stop supporting the
trafficking of Uyghur girls to inner China,
end religious repression and cultural
destruction, and uphold its promises to
address its serious human rights abuses.
